When Is the Best Time to Surf Strandhill? A Month-by-Month Guide
One of the most common questions we get at Atlantic Surf School is some version of this: “When should we come?”
The honest answer is that Strandhill works year-round. The Atlantic doesn’t take a season off. But “year-round” covers a lot of variation — in wave size, in water temperature, in how busy the beach is, and in what kind of experience you’re actually going to have. This guide breaks it down month by month so you can make a decision based on what matters to you.
The Short Answer
- Best for beginners: June, July, and August. Smaller, more consistent waves. Warmer air. Longer days.
- Best for progression (intermediate): September, October, March, April and May. More swell, less crowd, still manageable.
- Best for experienced surfers: November through February. Powerful Atlantic swells, quiet lineup, not for beginners.
- Busiest: July and August. Book lessons and accommodation well in advance.
- Quietest: January and February. Serious surfers only.
- Month by Month
January & February — Raw Atlantic
This is Strandhill at its most exposed. January and February bring some of the most powerful swell of the year, driven by North Atlantic storms tracking across from Canada and Iceland. The waves can be large, the water is cold, and the beach is quiet.
For experienced surfers, this is genuinely exciting. For beginners, it is not the right time to start. Lessons do run in winter — Atlantic Surf School operates year-round — but the conditions require more care and the experience is very different from a July morning.
- Wetsuit: 5mm full suit, boots, gloves, and hood. This is non-negotiable. The water is cold.
- Crowds: Almost none. You might have the lineup to yourself.
- Lessons available: Yes, weather and conditions permitting.
March & April — The Season Wakes Up
March and April are when Strandhill starts to feel like itself again. The days get longer, the air warms slightly, and the swells remain solid without being overwhelming. This is a good window for anyone who has some experience and wants to improve without fighting through summer crowds.
Easter weekend — which falls in March or April — is consistently one of the busiest times of year at Atlantic Surf School. Families and groups descend on Strandhill for the long weekend, and lessons book out quickly. If you’re planning an Easter visit, book as early as possible.
- Wetsuit: 5mm full suit, boots. Gloves optional depending on the day.
- Crowds: Building. Easter weekend can be very busy.
- Lessons available: Yes — this is when the season properly begins. Book ahead for Easter.
May — The Sweet Spot Before Summer
May is underrated. The swell is still present, the crowds haven’t arrived yet, and the days are long enough to make a full day trip worthwhile. Water temperature is still cold, but the air is pleasant and the village feels alive without being packed.
For group bookings — hen and stag parties, corporate days, school groups — May is one of the best months to plan. You get the full experience without competing with summer tourists for restaurant reservations and accommodation.
- Wetsuit: 4–5mm full suit. Boots recommended.
- Crowds: Moderate. Noticeably quieter than June–August.
- Lessons available: Yes. Enquire about group bookings.
June — Summer Begins
June marks the real start of summer at Strandhill. The waves settle into a more consistent, manageable size — ideal for beginners. The days are the longest of the year, the village fills with visitors, and the energy in Strandhill shifts noticeably.
This is when Marianna and Zuhé at Atlantic Surf School start seeing the full range of visitors — families from Dublin, groups from Cork and Galway, international tourists working their way along the Wild Atlantic Way. Lessons run every day. The National Surf Centre is busy.
- Wetsuit: 5mm full suit. Booties.
- Crowds: High and building toward July.
- Lessons available: Yes — book as far ahead as possible for weekend slots.
July & August — Peak Season
These are the two months when Strandhill runs at full capacity. The waves in summer are generally smaller than the rest of the year — which is exactly why this is the best time for beginners and families. Consistent, gentle swells, warm air, and long evenings make July and August the most forgiving conditions for a first surf experience.
Atlantic Surf School runs surf camps through July and August — five sessions across five days, the fastest way to actually learn to surf rather than having a single lesson – perfect for kids, adults and families looking to spend some time together. We run New Wave Youth Surf Camps in this period for younger surfers.
- Wetsuit: 5mm full suit. Some days a shorty is fine, but a full suit is always safer.Booties.
- Crowds: Maximum. The beach, the restaurants, and the accommodation are all busy.
- Booking: Do not wait. Weekend morning lessons in July and August fill weeks in advance.
- September — The Hidden Month
September is the best-kept surfing secret in Strandhill. The summer crowds have thinned out. The water is at its warmest — it takes months for the Atlantic to absorb the summer’s heat, and September is when you feel it. The swells start to build again as autumn approaches, producing better waves than the flat summer months.
For anyone who can travel in September, this is the combination that serious surfers know about: warm water, decent swell, and space in the lineup. Restaurants are easier to get into. Accommodation has availability. The village is relaxed.
- Wetsuit: 5mm full suit.Booties.
- Crowds: Low. This is the reward for not going in August.
- Lessons available: Yes. One of the best months to visit.
- October & November — Autumn Swell
October brings the Atlantic back to life. Swell increases steadily, the waves get more powerful, and the experience shifts toward intermediate and experienced surfers. For a beginner who has already had a few lessons and wants to progress, October is a great window — enough wave to practice on, not so much that it’s overwhelming.
By November, conditions are more consistently challenging. Lessons still run but require appropriate conditions. The village is quiet and the days are short.
- Wetsuit: 5mm full suit, boots.
- Crowds: Low.
- Lessons available: Yes, conditions permitting.
December — Quiet Winter
December is winter. The days are short, the water is cold, and Strandhill is quiet. For people who love surfing and don’t mind the cold, there’s something genuinely compelling about a December session on the Wild Atlantic Way — the beach mostly empty, the waves serious, the light low and dramatic.
For beginners or casual visitors, December is not the month to start. Come back in June.
- Wetsuit: 5mm full suit, boots, gloves, hood.
- Crowds: Very few.
- Lessons available: Yes, subject to conditions.
What to Wear: A Wetsuit Guide by Season
One of the most practical questions we get is about wetsuits. The short version:
| Season | Recommended Wetsuit |
|---|---|
| June–August | 3–4mm full suit +boots |
| May & September | 4mm full suit + boots |
| March, April, October | 4–5mm full suit + boots |
| November–February | 5mm full suit + boots + gloves + hood |
Atlantic Surf School provides all wetsuits, boots, and equipment as part of every lesson. You don’t need to bring or own any of this — it’s included.
Checking the Surf Forecast
If you want to know what conditions will be like on a specific date before you travel, the two most reliable tools for Strandhill are:
Surf-forecast.com — gives swell height, period, and wind conditions up to 16 days out. Look for swell height under 1.5m and offshore or light winds for ideal beginner conditions.
Met Éireann — the Irish national weather service. Reliable for wind and rain forecasts, which matter as much as the swell for a comfortable day out.
One thing worth knowing: the surf forecast can look intimidating if you don’t know what you’re reading. That’s what instructors are for. If you’ve booked a lesson and you’re worried about conditions, contact us — we’ll tell you honestly whether the forecast works for what you want to do.
A Note on Year-Round Surfing
Marianna and Zuhé at Atlantic Surf School are consistent about one thing: Strandhill has surf every month of the year. The question is never whether there are waves — it’s whether those waves are right for what you’re trying to do.
For a complete beginner, the sweet spot is June through September. For someone who wants to improve and doesn’t mind a bit of cold, autumn is underrated. For experienced surfers who want to test themselves, winter is there.
There is no wrong time to come. There’s just a right time for you.
